Suar's £120k wedge
IN THE MONEY ... Luis Suarez has been rewarded for his goals
Last Updated: 08th March 2013
LUIS SUAREZ has been handed a 50 PER CENT pay boost — taking his wages to £120,000 a week.
The Liverpool hitman is the first player to benefit from the club’s new incentive-based contracts. The Uruguayan’s incredible season has seen his wages rocket from £80,000 a week to around £120,000 under the club’s new pay structure.
Suarez, 26, only signed a new deal last summer which doubled his basic wages from £40,000 to £80,000 a week.
This season the striker has taken his game to new levels.
He has missed only one Premier League game — when he was banned for the West Ham clash — and bagged 21 goals in 27 appearances.
He has also netted seven goals in cup competitions this term.
Those performances have triggered incentive clauses in the Uruguayan’s contract, which have lifted his weekly earnings to a cool £120,000.
Liverpool’s American owners Fenway Sports Group are determined to avoid the mistakes of the previous regime, which saw players collecting huge salaries.
New Kop boss Brendan Rodgers was given the task of removing some of those high earners.
All contracts now offered by the club are bonus based, meaning big money now goes to those making big contributions, rather than watching from the stands.
Suarez’s cash pot comes on the back of him being such a success at Anfield and is seen as a more ‘natural’ reward, rather than the constant need to renegotiate terms.
The striker moved to Merseyside from Ajax for £22.8million two years ago on a 5½-year deal.
He now has 49 goals in 90 appearances for the Kop outfit. --- The Sun
