Next please! Thomas Vermaelen eyed to follow Fabregas and Song from Arsenal to Barcelona
Spanish giants are unsure about Eric Abidal's long-term
health and are set to use David Villa as bait to get their hands on the
Gunners defender
Barcelona are keeping tabs on Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen as they search for Eric Abidal’s eventual successor, writes the Sunday People.
Abidal, 33, was readmitted to hospital in the Catalonian capital for a short spell in January over unresolved issues that had emerged following a liver transplant last April – and there remain doubts over how long he can continue to perform at the top level.
Barca are already scouting potential replacements and they have stepped up their checks on Belgium star Vermaelen.
It means Gunners boss Arsene Wenger could face another frustrating summer trying to hang on to a key man.
Vermaelen, 27, signed a four-year contract extension in October 2011 and was handed the captaincy by Wenger when Cesc Fabregas left for the Nou Camp.
Barca have since also bought midfielder Alex Song from the Gunners.
Wenger has gone cold on the idea of signing Barcelona striker David Villa. However, the Spanish giants will try to reignite his interest if it will help get a deal for Vermaelen done.
Barcelona have already put around £40million aside for new signings in the summer and that pot will grow if they can offload Villa, versatile defender and midfielder Adriano and young forward Cristian Tello.-- Mirror Football.
