Melbourne: In yet another marathon clash, Stanislas Wawrinka defeated defending champion Novak Djokovic 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 9-7 in the men's singles quarter-final of Australian Open 2014.

Djokovic – who was seeking his fourth consecutive Australian Open title, had no problems in the first set which he won convincingly.

But the Swiss made a spectacular comeback as he won the second and the third set, as a frustrated Djokovic didn't look at his best. Wawrinka's serve made the difference at times, as he made the World No. 2 stretch on most of the occasions and followed it with a volley winner.

But Djoker who is well known to make comebacks from precarious positions, sealed the must-win fourth set to take the match into yet another five-setter.

Both the players were at their best in the fifth and the final set. Djokovic made two unforced errors in the sixteenth game of the final set off his own serve when the scores levelled at 30-30. Surprisingly, Djokovic missed an easy chance at the nets and followed it with another wide shot as Wawrinka registered an emphatic win.

Djokovic hadn't lost a set prior to the match in the tournament, and he was once again tested by Wawrinka, who gave him an epic fight in the fourth round of the Australian Open last year – a match that lasted for over five hours. When these two met in the fourth round of Australian Open 2013, Nole edged past Wawrinka in five sets - 1-6 7-5 6-4 6-7(5) 12-10 at Melbourne Park to move into the quarterfinals.

Wawrinka has now advanced to the semis and he will play against Tomas Berdych, who ousted David Ferrer to advance into his first Australian Open semi-final. ----------------- ZEENEWS.com
