Scolari fumes at 'ridiculous' Deco/Diego Costa comparisons

The 64-year-old has reacted angrily to journalists who made correlations between the striker's scenario with the coach's former players' decision to represent Portugal

Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has slammed "ridiculous" comparisons likening Diego Costa's situation at international level to that of Pepe and Deco.

The Atletico Madrid striker ended weeks worth of speculation by officially switching allegiances from Brazil to Spain earlier this week, prompting Scolari to later accuse him of "turning his back" on his nation of birth having already represented the Selecao.

Brazil-born duo Deco and Pepe were called up to the Portugal national team when the 64-year-old coach was at the helm, but the former Chelsea manager has reacted angrily to suggestions that the scenarios are comparable.

"Am I angry? Do not put words in my mouth," Felipao told reporters.

"What’s the difference between Diego Costa and Deco? Do not ask ridiculous questions. It’s ridiculous to compare. I’ll answer in four or five years. I’ll answer if I want.

"Deco was called because he never played for Brazil. You forget that Pepe was also nationalised and at no time before then had been called up. There is plenty of difference."

The Brazilian Football Federation [CBF] has since called for Costa - who was eligible for Spain via five-year residency - to be stripped of his citizenship of his native country for making the controversial switch.

Scolari, who attempted to steal a march on Spain coach Vicente del Bosque by calling the striker up for the upcoming friendlies with Honduras and Chile, has since replaced the marksman with AC Milan's Robinho. ---------------- goal.com
