Wales will not risk Bale fitness, insists Coleman

Real Madrid's €100 million summer signing has not exerted himself on a football pitch since July 16, and his national team boss is keen not to damage his star man

Real Madrid new-boy Gareth Bale will not play for Wales if he is at risk of injury, insists boss Chris Coleman.

Bale has been called up for his country's World Cup qualifiers against Macedonia and Serbia despite not featuring for Tottenham since July 16 because of a foot injury.

And with Florentino Perez keen to protect the €100 million world record signing he acquired from Spurs on Sunday, Coleman is adamant he will be taking no chances.

"We will not risk Gareth or anyone else," Coleman told reporters.

"If there is any chance we are going to send a player back injured, we don’t take that risk. Understandably, loads of people will want to see him on Tuesday, but we will not risk Gareth or anyone else.

"We will monitor how he goes in the next couple of training sessions. However, he has no chance of playing 90 minutes in either game. We know that before we even have a conversation.

"How much of a part he can play will be determined by how he reacts over the next 24 to 48 hours in the training sessions. He will be with the group today. He will be doing some specific work. But in the main, he will be doing a tactical session with us.

"I will contact Carlo [Ancelotti] to thank him for not putting any obstacles in the way. Real have been great. I cannot speak highly enough of them, there hasn’t been a single problem, not one phone call or demand. He literally arrived, they unveiled him and he came straight home. That’s credit to Real Madrid." ------------------------- goal.com
