Manchester City have been rocked by the news that new signing Martin Demichelis is out for six weeks.
Demichelis, signed for £3.8m from Atletico Madrid on Sunday, suffered knee ligament damage during training following a challenge.
Although Demichelis will not require surgery to address the problem, deposed Premier League champions City have confirmed they expect him to be out until mid October.
It is a huge blow to City, whose defensive options were already stretched with skipper Vincent Kompany and Micah Richards both sidelined.
Kompany is battling to overcome a groin injury to be fit for the Manchester derby on September 22, while Richards only resumed training this week following a hamstring tear.
Demichelis was brought in by City boss Manuel Pellegrini as defensive cover, but the injury means Matija Nastasic and Joleon Lescott are his only two fit recognised centre-backs.
Midfielder Javi Garcia had to be deployed as an emergency central defender in City’s 3-2 defeat against Cardiff and Pellegrini can only hope Nastsic and Lescott remain fit.
