Cape Verde sanctioned, Tunisia take their place in qualification playoff
Fifa have docked points from Cape Verde in favour of Tunisia
The Blue Sharks were stripped of their record
qualification to the World Cup knockout phase after being found guilty
of fielding an ineligible player against Tunisia
Upon a complaint filed by the Tunisia Football
Federation, the Fifa Disciplinary Committee on Thursday ruled that Cape
Verde were guilty of fielding an ineligible player during the September
7th clash. They beat Tunisia 2-0 in Rade, but now the outcome is
overturned 3-0 in favour of the Carthage Eagles. So Tunisia have now
qualified for the World Cup qualifying knockout stage. The Disciplinary Committee said by means of a telephone conference that Cape Verde fielded Fernando Varela, who was still serving a four-match suspension imposed on him after receiving a red card for unsporting conduct towards a match official during a World Cup qualifier on March 24.
The Committee also fined the Cape Verdean Football Association (FCF) CHF 6,000 (€4,850) for breaching art. 55 par. 1 of the Fifa Disciplinary Code and art. 8 of the 2014 Fifa World Cup Brazil Regulations.
Cape Verde have now dropped to second place in Group B with nine points while Tunisia move to the top with 14 points. The draw for the knockout phase in the African zone will be conducted on Monday, September 16. --------------------- goal.com
