Player Ratings: Barcelona 0-3 Bayern Munich (Agg 0-7)
An all-German Champions League final has been set up after the Bavarians dismantled their hosts and Goal was on hand to judge all the performers
By Robin Bairner
-
1957
Víctor Valdés
Was rarely stretched over the course of 90 minutes, despite the numerous attacking waves from Bayern. His sole notable error was a poor clearance that ultimately ended with the Spain international picking the ball from his net. -
1959
Daniel Alves
Did succeed in getting behind Alaba at times but lacked the support to make a telling pass and the determination to threaten himself. His crossing was disappointing throughout and seemed to lose heart towards the end as he was twice caught sleeping as Ribery set up the final two goals. Booked on the stroke of half-time for a late challenge on Schweinsteiger. -
2886
Piqué
Sprinted half the length of the field to make a goal-saving challenge on Robben in the early stages of the match and then did likewise on Lahm a short while later. Scrambled effectively on several occasions to save a disjointed rearguard but put the ball through his own net in the closing stages. -
2358
Bartra
Looked out of his depth in this encounter, at least partly because his side adopted such an open approach. Was tugged out of position by the movement of Mandzukic in the early stages, whose strength also posed the young defender endless problems. Did improve as the fixture wore on until the late capitulation. -
1558
Adriano
Looked to push forward at every opportunity but often had little impact when he did. A powerful drive from range was comfortably gathered by Neuer and more often than not his approach left the door open for Bayern to break into. Allowed Robben to cut inside too easily for the opening goal. -
2167
Cesc Fàbregas
Played the central role that is so synonymous with Messi yet the former Arsenal man did not have the impact of the benched Argentine. His decision making seemed sluggish when it needed to be sharp and his touch let him down at a couple of vital moments, albeit under scrutiny from the Bayern defence. -
1762
Xavi
Was the fulcrum of Barcelona’s performance as one would expect, though the Spain midfielder’s legendary technique let him down when he had an opportunity to volley at goal midway through the first half. Withdrawn shortly after the visitors struck their opener. -
2066
Andrés Iniesta Luján
Showed fleeting glimpses of his excellence and these were typically the best moments for Barcelona. Booked for a frustrated challenge in the second half, which rather summed up his evening. Taken off with 25 minutes to do. -
4943
Alex Song
Played an important sweeping role in the midfield and was often to be found dropping into the defence to make a critical block as Bayern countered. Played an important role but eventually could not stem the tide and was outpaced by Ribery as the third goal was scored. -
2068
David Villa
Was asked to provide some cutting edge to Barcelona’s attacking play but was kept firmly under lock and key by the visiting rearguard. When he did get one sight of goal in the second half his shot was mishit badly wide, which typified the Catalans’ flat evening. -
2376
Pedro Flop of the Match
Failed to make a significant impact on this game, though he did have arguably Barcelona’s best effort on goal from range in the first half. Did not make any inroads into a well-organised Bayern defence.
Substitutions
-
1138
Montoya
Brought on in the closing stages. -
2442
Thiago Alcántara
Given the final quarter of the match in place of Iniesta. -
2153
Alexis Sánchez
Made no impression after replacing Xavi.
-
837
Manuel Neuer
An extremely quiet night for the Germany international goalkeeper, who might have expected to have faced a tempest at some stage over the course of the evening. Was first tested midway through the first half but turned over Pedro’s long-range drive with comfort. -
7610
Daniel Van Buyten
Brought into the starting XI because Dante was suffering with flu, the Belgian gave a terrific account of himself in the heart of the defence. Kept Villa at bay impressively and covered well for Boateng on the rare occasions he was beaten. -
767
Jerome Boateng
One slight slip in the first half when he allowed a long ball to bounce and forced him to make a sharp recovery challenge but otherwise the centre-back produced a flawless performance as he was persistently in the correct position. Never seemed to be truly troubled. -
916
Philipp Lahm
Made a terrific burst forward in the first half but had his shot blocked by Song as he sought his first Champions League goal ever and was then thwarted by a desperate challenge by Pique. Was certainly not on a leash, though the German did not forget his defensive duties either. -
1169
Franck Ribéry
Often found himself with great freedom down the left as Dani Alves pushed forward down his channel. The Frenchman looked a real menace going forward as he provided the assist for Muller’s goal and also induced Pique’s own goal with a dangerous centre. Did a good deal of defensive dirty work, too. -
979
Javi Martínez
A solid performance in the heart of the midfield from the Spaniard, who no doubt relished this victory. Was the least adventurous of the Bayern midfield but he did a stoical defensive job and managed to avoid a booking that would have seen him ruled out of the final. -
14716
Arjen Robben Top of the Match
Could have completely finished the tie as a contest when he got clear on goal after 11 minutes but dallied too long and allowed Pique to get a challenge. But he made up for that early in the second half with a brilliant curled finish. Just as he did a week ago, the Dutchman produced the kind of industry that he is not often noted for. -
968
D. Alaba
Will be remembered in this match for his terrific crossfield pass that provided the assist for Robben’s opening goal but the left-back produced a solid defensive performance. Did switch off for a few minutes after Bayern opened the scoring but was otherwise very impressive. -
1039
Bastian Schweinsteiger
The German was incredibly influential for Bayern as he dictated the pace their attacks were made at, supported the offence and did sterling work defensively. A brilliant flick created a golden opportunity for Lahm early on. Preserved by being withdrawn 25 minutes from time. -
1085
Mario Mandzukic
Looked to use his physical strength against the Barcelona centre-backs but much of his running was simply to create room for his fellow attackers, who had a great deal of joy running from deep. -
9211
Thomas Müller
Was absolutely outstanding in the first leg and though perhaps not quite at this level at Camp Nou, the Germany international was a terrific presence for his side. Like the whole of the German side, he worked superbly for his team and rose to head home the third at the back post late on.
Substitutions
-
569
Rafinha
Played little more than 10 minutes and nearly grabbed a fourth for his side. -
6210
Luiz Gustavo Dias
Feature for 25 minutes at the end as the match was winding down. -
638
Anatoliy Tymoshchuk
Given a quarter of an hour cameo.
