David Villa vs Aston Villa? Spurs want to being the Barcelona star to England
Gonzalo Arroyo Moreno
Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas has opened talks with Barcelona striker David Villa, writes John Cross.
Villa-Boas
is desperate to sign Villa, and is hoping his personal relationship
will help win the battle to snatch the Spain international. We revealed on May 9
that Spurs had reignited their interest in want-away Villa, who will be
allowed to leave Barca in search of more regular football in what is a
World Cup year.
The 31-year-old has also been targeted by Arsenal
and Liverpool in the past, but Spurs are hoping to persuade him to come
to White Hart Lane - even though they did not qualify for the Champions
League.
Barcelona will give the green light to a deal if anyone matches their £12m valuation and are allowing him to negotiate a move.
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is prepared to bankroll the club's pursuit of Champions League next football by signing TWO big-name strikers this summer.
They tried for Leandro Damiao in January, but could not get the Brazil international out of his club, Internacional.
Tottenham have gone back for Damiao, and he and Villa are their first choice to spearhead a rebuilding programme this summer.
They are also keeping tabs on Valencia's Roberto Soldado and
Juventus striker Mirko Vucinic, in case they miss out on other targets.
Juventus
would want around £12m for 29-year-old Vucinic, but his age would count
against him as Villas-Boas has already had a big battle to convince
Levy over Villa.
* SPURS' England Under-21 defender Adam Smith is wanted by relegated Queens Park Rangers, writes Darren Witcoop.
Hoops boss Harry Redknapp is chasing full-back Smith on a season's loan as a replacement for misfit Jose Bosingwa.
Smith, who will wear the Three Lions at this summer's U-21
European Championship, has seen his path blocked by Kyle Walker at the
White Hart Lane side.
Redknapp is looking for players with
experience of the Championship, and the 22-year-old fits the bill after
catching the eye in loan stints with Leeds and Millwall.
