Bad press: Jose Mourinho backlash is in full swing...

Jose Mourinho was ripped apart by the Spanish press yesterday (Wednesday) after flirting with Chelsea in the wake of
Real Madrid’s Champions League exit, writes Darren Lewis.
The Special One used his post-match press conference to settle a few scores with the country’s media on Tuesday night.
The papers responded viciously yesterday.
Spanish daily Sport led the vitriol with a front page that splashed: “Goodbye Mourinho - consumed by his own failure”.
El
Pais accused Mourinho of using Real’s narrow semi-final defeat to Borussia Dortmund as an “opportunity for personal aggrandisement, self-promotion and the construction of alternative stories”.
AS
carried a picture of Mourinho underneath a shot of keeper Iker Casillas
and defender Sergio Ramos crying with the headline: “Mourinho and his navel".
In an editorial the paper also accused the Special One of thinking of himself on a heartbreaking night for the club.
It
said:
“Mourinho, on the night that we suffered a terrible punch in the
stomach, announced that he was possibly leaving. In three years he has
not understood the greatness of this club.”
Marca
said: “The elimination of Real Madrid at the hands of Borussia went into
the background. The news was Mourinho wanting to leave.”
El Mundo Deportivo claimed Mourinho would deflect the blame on to his dressing room for his shortcomings.
It
also
hit out at Mourinho’s decision to drop legendary Spain keeper Casillas.
It said : “Madrid is left in a trance, with its fans divided.
“Mourinho
will surely blame his players. La Liga was lost in October, the Champions League in the semi-finals for the third year in a row.
“Even
with
the Copa del Rey Final to come, a season in which Mourinho sacrificed
Casillas must be seen as a failure, especially as he has the most
expensive and complete squad in Madrid’s history.”
ENGLAND'S IDOL BUT A PAIN IN SPAIN
Here Mirror Sport offers: Five reasons we love Jose and he's poison in Madrid
Why we adore him....
* Sheer bravado
From
that
first Chelsea press conference, when he told us he was "a Special One"
to his moans about not being able to shop in Waitrose, nobody was quite
like him. * Constant conflict
Nothing sells
like controversy
and Mourinho's scattergun approach, firing at all and sundry from the FA
and UEFA to the Berkshire Ambulance Service, made him unmissable. Mr Personality: Jose Mourinho
* Brilliant improvisation
Sometimes
the tactical changes were planned but on many occasions his off the cuff
response to events was awe-dropping and inspirational. Look how he
reacted to Nani's red card by winning the game while Fergie tried to
wind up the crowd. * Showmanship
Whether it
was running along the touchline at Old Trafford with Porto, "shushing"
at Liverpool fans, exchanging handshakes with his bench during the game
or simply showing his passion, Mourinho was never predictable. * Epitome of cool
The
grey raincoat was auctioned off but Mourinho was for the Premier League
what Muhammad Ali was for boxing in his hey-day - good-looking, suave, sophisticated and the best.
Why they can't stand him...
* Egotism
The
Spanish
believe nobody is bigger than the club, especially when that club is
Real Madrid. Mourinho made it clear, from the outset, that he had a
different view. * Idol worship
Two players
are seen as the symbols of the Bernebeu, with the Madrid media in their
pockets. Mourinho, though, fell out totally with both Iker Casillas and
Sergio Ramos. Many have never forgiven him. Always looking elsewhere: Jose Mourinho's personal agenda dominates say his critics
PA
* Short-termism
Last year, when
Mourinho dethroned Pep Guardiola's Barca, he could do no wrong. This
time round, with Tito Vilanova in charge at the Camp Nou, Real have
not even been contenders. The Portuguese has copped the blame. * Feuds fester more
Mourinho
has
decided the majority of those who cover Real regularly are part of a
group determined to oust him. His critics have decided they might as
well respond in kind. It has become an ugly, brutal slug-fest. * Angling for opportunities
Even
when
things were going well for him in Madrid, Mourinho made covetous eyes
back towards the Premier League. The Madrid board capitulated, bowing to
his demands and buying him off but the game of bluff has not been
forgotten. Now it's pay-back.
