The midfielder has not played the last two Chelsea matches and that could become three if he is rested on Thursday
Mikel Obi could be left out of the Chelsea side that is going to take on FC Basel in a second leg Europa League tie on Thursday night. The European champions will seek to consolidate their 2-1 away win and that could mean further rest for Mikel, as he is a yellow card away from missing the final.
Though Ramires who could have played suffered a leg injury against Swansea last weekend, Rafael Benitez could play the pair of Frank Lampard and David Luiz in midfield to preserve his Nigerian midfielder.
Mikel did not feature against Basel last Thursday and was on the bench for all 90 minutes against Swansea. His compatriot, Victor Moses scored last Thursday but was not listed for the 2-0 win over Swansea so he could be back for the second leg.
Mikel has played 22 times in the league this season.
Chelsea play Basel on Thursday and then are away to Premier League champions Manchester United on Sunday at Old Trafford as they continue their quest for a top-four finish and a return to the Champions League. ----------------- goal.com
