Goal rates every player as Stephan El Shaarawy snatches a crucial away goal to give the Rossoneri a slender advantage ahead of the second leg

-
01
Jeroen Zoet
The 22-year-old produced a confident performance between the sticks and showed good reflexes to deny Milan's attacking trio. Has every right to be displeased with his defenders for the opener. -
21
Karim Rekik
Spurned a glorious opportunity to seal the win when he headed wide when unmarked from a few yards out but nonetheless a promising display from the on-loan Manchester City youngster who stood up to the test against former team-mate Balotelli. -
12
Jeffrey Bruma
The young centre-back produced a solid defensive display, winning the majority of his aerial duels and tackles. Also had a hand in the PSV equaliser when his fierce shot was spilled by Abbiati. -
00
Jetro Willems
Joined in the PSV attack by getting into some promising advanced positions down the left but sometimes failed to track back and left his defence exposed. -
01
Joshua Brenet
Struggled to track the movement of El Shaarawy and was often outclassed by the Italian forward who surged beyond him to head home the opening goal for Milan. -
63
Adam Maher
The summer signing caused Milan problems by filtering into pockets of space between the midfield and defence. Tested Abbiati on several occasions but perhaps should have done better when his shot cannoned back off the crossbar. -
13
Stijn Schaars
The deep-lying playmaker worked tirelessly against Milan's experienced midfield trio and produced some moments of creative genius, especially his chipped pass for Maher in the first half. -
188
Ji-Sung Park Top of the Match
The South Korean excelled on his second debut for PSV with a typical hard-working showing. Tired in the second half but his leadership and experience proved valuable to Cocu's youthful side. -
23
Tim Matavz
Got himself into some brilliant positions and was not afraid to shoot. Showed good predatory instinct to capitalise on Abbiati's error and level the scoring. -
32
Georginio Wijnaldum
Failed to make the most of his blistering pace down the right but did produce a good final ball when in an advanced position. -
03
Memphis Depay
Showed some neat footwork down the left wing but ultimately failed to get the better of Abate. Was responsible for allowing the wing-back to get in behind him to cross for Milan's opener.
Substitutions
-
13
Jurgen Locadia
Entered the action late on but found himself well marked by Zapata and Mexes in the closing stages. -
12
Florian Jozefzoon
Was thrown on as a second-half substitute by Cocu but failed to make an impact off the bench.
-
76
Christian Abbiati
Produced a string of smart saves to keep PSV at bay in the first half but should have done better to hold Bruma's shot which led to PSV's equaliser. -
91
Cristian Zapata
An average performance from the Colombian who still seems to be shaking off the pre-season rustiness. His pace often helped him to make up for his suspect positioning. -
128
Ignazio Abate
Aside from one sloppy backpass, it was a solid performance from the speedy right-back who dealt excellently with the threat of Depay. Produced a pinpoint cross for El Shaarawy to open the scoring. -
64
Philippe Mexes
Produced a brave header to deny Matavz in the first half but was too frequently found the wrong side of the Slovenian striker. Missed a good chance to win the match late on. -
811
Kevin-Prince Boateng
Contributed to the first goal with a defence-splitting pass but otherwise failed to show his creative ability. Showed good defensive awareness to track the runs of Willems, however. -
102
Nigel De Jong
An experienced, well-disciplined showing from the defensive midfielder on the return to his homeland. Often acted as a fifth Milan defender and helped prevent service to Matavz. -
102
Riccardo Montolivo
Helped keep things simple for Milan in the middle of the pitch but failed to provide creativity to the Rossoneri attack. -
611
Sulley Ali Muntari Flop of the Match
The Ghanaian produced some crucial blocks and challenges throughout the game but often failed to track the runs of Maher who dictated the midfield for sustained periods of the game. -
92
Urby Emanuelson
An assured performance from the former Ajax man who marshalled the runs of Wijnaldum effectively down the wing. Helped keep things tight at the back under heavy PSV pressure. -
124
Mario Balotelli
Dropped off the defence excellently to pick his passes and set up some presentable opportunities for his team-mates. Was unlucky to see a curling effort tipped onto the crossbar. -
165
Stephan El Shaarawy
Caused havoc down the left with his clever movement and close control. Frequently evaded the surveillance of Brenet and capped his impressive performance with a composed header to give Milan the lead.
Substitutions
-
91
Andrea Poli
Introduced by Allegri late on to provide some fresh legs in midfield and nearly snatched a winner late on, only to be denied by a good save by Zoet. -
94
L. Niang
Came on for the remaining few minutes but showed good invention and positive attacking play. Promises to be a pivotal season ahead for the young Frenchman. -------------------- goal.com
