Guwahati: A delegation of FIFA, led by Deputy Director of Competitions and Events Head, Inaki Alvarez, met Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to discuss holding of some matches of FIFA Under-17 World Cup in the city in 2017.

According to an official release, Alvarez said he had inspected the stadiums and training facilities at Indira Gandhi Athletics Stadium, Nehru Stadium, SAI Sports Complex and the Judges Field in the city.

"We have been on the move, non-stop, after landing in Guwahati," he said.

The statement further said the FIFA official told Gogoi that Guwahati has the requisite facilities but some stadiums require maintenance to hold the prestigious event.

"I am sure that with your support, we can make it happen. Time is there. Though there is no emergency, there is a sense of urgency," Alvarez said.

Alvarez hoped that Assam`s sports relationship with FIFA would be lasting and meaningful.

"We have a whole lot of things to do here. It`s good to see the passion for football in this part of the country," he added.

On the other hand, Gogoi promised to extend all possible support and cooperation from the state government in holding the event.

"Our government will go to any length in extending support to the tournament and would take necessary steps to spruce up the stadiums for the big event," he added.

Gogoi asked the FIFA officials to submit the itinerary in detail along with the estimated cost to enable the government to prepare in advance.

The FIFA under 17 World Cup in 2017 will witness participation of 190 countries.
