The Super Eagles striker, according to reports, wants to take his scoring boots from Ukraine to England
Super Eagles striker Brown Ideyecould be on the move to the English Premier League in the summer as clubs from England continue monitoring his goal scoring prowess in Ukraine. The Dynamo Kiev striker has scored 16 goals in 25 league matches for his club, who are second on the league table.
"I am aware of interest from several Premier League clubs in Brown," Hootan Ahmadi, Ideye’s agent told Sky Sports.
"Brown is keen to move to England and to play in the Premier League.
"We will assess all offers this summer before considering our options for Brown,” Ahmadi added.
Ideye was rumoured to be wanted by Chelsea last season after Didier Drogba’s exit but that did not materialise and now names like Swansea and Newcastle are being mentioned as potential suitors.

The striker was a key part of Nigeria's 2013 Africa Cup of Nations triumph where he scored a goal in the 4-1 semi final demolition of Mali.

He will be part of the squad to play in the 2013 Confederations Cup in Brazil this June. ------------------- goal.com

Cazorla: Trophies Not Top 4 Finish

Cazorla: Trophies Not Top 4 Finish

Santi Cazorla says Arsenal must learn from this season's inconsistency and aim for more than a top-four finish next year.

Champions League qualification is the last prize available to Cazorla in his first season in England, although Arsenal are competing with London rivals Tottenham and Chelsea for just two remaining places.
A run of two wins in eight games in the autumn put paid to the Gunners' chances in the Premier League, while back-to-back home defeats to Blackburn and Bayern Munich in February meant the end of their cup hopes.

Cazorla told the club website: "The aim is to win trophies. Unfortunately Arsenal has gone eight years without a trophy, which is a long time for such a huge club that's always up there fighting with the other big clubs.

"This year we haven't been able to, for various reasons. I hope next year will be another story. We want to be fighting for the Premier League and all the tournaments we enter. We're a great team and I'm sure we will.

"What I've taken from this year is that as a team we weren't very consistent for half of the season, which cost us in terms of reaching the higher positions in the league.

"Now we're a lot more consistent and that's the form we were lacking before - being consistent and getting the three points whenever we could.

"We're a long way off the top because of this lack of form, even though it was only for half the season." -------------------- Complete Sports

No Messi, no comeback as Wembley gets set for all-German Champions League final

Bayern Munich dismantled a shellshocked Barcelona at the Nou Camp to book an all-German Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund on May 25.

Barca needed a miracle to overturn a four-goal deficit after last week's first-leg hammering in Munich, but that was never going to happen from the moment boss Tito Vilanova left Lionel Messi on the bench again due to a hamstring problem.

The Bundesliga champions were in control throughout and second-half goals from Arjen Robben and Thomas Muller, plus a Gerard Pique own goal, ensured Barca were not only beaten, but embarrassed. ---------------- Complete Sports

The doping doctor Eufemiano Fuentes & football's unanswered questions

The doping doctor Eufemiano Fuentes & football's unanswered questions

The doping doctor Eufemiano Fuentes & football's unanswered questions

The decision of Spanish courts to destroy evidence that could link players with the taking of performance enhancing drugs risks tainting the game's battle against cheating

COMMENT
By Peter Staunton

If a claim from one of sport's most notorious doping doctors that he worked with footballers is not sufficient to provoke a response from the game's governing bodies then what is?

Eufemiano Fuentes, the doctor convicted this week in a Spanish court of endangering public health, has seen his medical legitimacy obliterated by continued and substantial links to the murky field of doping in sport.

He was given a one-year suspended jail sentence on Tuesday, as well as being struck off the register for four years, for providing blood transfusions to cyclists. Fuentes was one of the main players implicated in the high-profile stings Operacion Puerto and Operation Galgo, during which quantities of illegal performance enhancing substances were discovered on his premises. He faced trial on public health grounds as doping in Spain was not illegal at the time.

Distressingly for Spain's Anti-Doping Agency (AEA), as well as the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada), judge Julia Patricia Santamaria ruled that all evidence pertaining to the case should now be destroyed. That body of evidence contains some 211 frozen blood bags found on Fuentes' premises during the raids as well as relevant documents. The bags of red blood cells and plasma would unquestionably identify athletes who worked with Fuentes. AEA has 10 days to appeal the decision to destroy the bags, which it intends to do.

"We do not consider this the end of the process. We will now use all resources at our disposal to investigate further," AEA chief Ana Munoz told BBC Radio 5 on Tuesday.

The destruction of those blood bags would mean a huge opportunity missed for the world's anti-doping bodies and the Fuentes trial, a potentially crucial watershed moment, would become a washout.

Guilty | Convicted doctor Eufemiano Fuentes claims he has worked with footballers

Judge Santamaria, early in the trial, ruled that Fuentes was not obliged to identify clients beyond the cyclists whose names are already in the public sphere. For a country keen to shed its image of being soft on doping offences, the verdict in the trial is a disaster, especially with Madrid's designs on hosting the 2020 summer Olympic Games in mind. President of Spain's Olympic Committee, Alejandro Blanco, sees things similarly.

Quite simply if Spanish authorities fail to take command of this emerging sporting crisis, doping, then there is the danger that recent achievements in tennis, basketball and football will forever be tainted.

Fuentes has admitted to the court that he worked with athletes across a number of different sports, including football, and that cyclists made up only a percentage of his patient body. He has had uncomfortably close links with football in recent times and questions remain regarding his proximity to it.

To what extent is football implicated in the Fuentes affair?

"They were sports people of all kinds," Fuentes told the court in February. "It could be a cyclist from a cycling team, a footballer from a football team, a tennis player or a boxer. There were also athletes." Until the full extent of this relationship with football players and teams is put under scrutiny then the sport could be seen as complicit by silence.

Is football the new cycling?

Jorge Jaksche, a German road cyclist who had his career ended due to his involvement in Operacion Puerto, believes that Fuentes treated players during the 2006 World Cup in Germany. After the raids, Jaksche co-operated with investigators who asked him whether he had been treated by Fuentes in Frankfurt in 2006.

He is convinced that, following a Europe-wide investigation into Fuentes' practices, the trail led to footballers participating in the World Cup. "Normally he would only go to Germany if there was a stage of the Tour de France there but I think the truth is in 2006 there was the soccer World Cup in Germany and the German police knew something about it but didn't have the whole information," Jaksche said.

Fellow cyclist Jesus Manzano, who blew the lid off the Operacion Puerto affair, is on record as stating that he saw footballers come and go from the clinic in Madrid

Fellow cyclist Jesus Manzano, who blew the lid off the Operacion Puerto affair, is on record as stating that he saw footballers come and go from the clinic in Madrid. AEA has appointed captain Enrique Gomez as its special investigator to examine the evidence gathered in the Fuentes affair. He worked previously for the Guardia Civil and was involved with Operacion Puerto. He has also spoken on numerous occasions to Manzano, who has provided the captain with names of athletes he alleges worked with Fuentes.

The doctor, for his part, has also offered to collaborate with investigators. "If they felt I was useful and they asked me, I would consider it and would be willing. What I don't know is if what I would give them would be worthwhile to them or not," he said at trial.

One last, desperate attempt at a bargaining tool? Fuentes' career is in tatters and he needs to salvage what he can. Football might be soon confronting the same issue. ---------------------- goal.com

PSG step up pursuit of €35m Isco

PSG step up pursuit of €35m Isco

PSG step up pursuit of €35m Isco

May 2, 2013 9:00:00 AM
The race is intensifying for the Spain star, with the big-spending French giants in pole position for a summer move having scouted the 21-year-old in a recent Liga match

EXCLUSIVE
by Francisco Acedo and Kris Voakes

Paris Saint-Germain are set to raise the stakes in the race for Malaga star Isco after the club sent scouts to watch the player in action last weekend.

Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester City and Monaco have shown an interest in the 21-year-old but the Andalusians have remained steadfast in their refusal not to negotiate below the former Valencia man's €35 million release clause.

Now PSG are ready to usurp fellow suitors after sporting director Leonardo ordered scouts to watch Isco in Malaga's 2-1 Liga victory over Getafe at La Rosaleda on Sunday. The French club's presence could well spark other clubs into action as the chase intensifies for Isco, who has a contract with the Liga outfit until 2016.

The transfer tussle comes on the back of a second season of stand-out performances from the forward, which helped Manuel Pellegrini's side reach the last eight of the Champions League and have seen the side head into the final five games of the league season in the running for a top-four place.

There could be further uncertainty ahead for the Qatari-owned side, with Isco's unclear future mirroring that of his coach. According to reports in the Spanish press this week, Pellegrini has met with Manchester City sporting director Txiki Begiristain over the possibility of replacing Roberto Mancini as coach at Eastlands.

"The only thing we know is that Manuel is happy at Malaga," said Vicente Casado, the club's director general when asked about the reports. "And it is known that everyone appreciates him."

The 59-year-old is contracted to Malaga until June 2015, but the club are expecting interest from Europe's big guns this summer and have been linked with Javier Aguirre, of Espanyol, to replace the Chilean should he be tempted away.

A Malaga source has told Goal there have been no fresh discussions about Pellegrini's future in the wake of the club's successful run in the Champions League, which saw them come within minutes of a place in the semi-finals. -------------- goal.com

SHORUNMU: EAGLES WILL MISS EMENIKE

SHORUNMU: EAGLES WILL MISS EMENIKE

Super Eagles goalkeepers trainer, Ike Shorunmu has lamented that the team will miss 2013 Africa Cup of Nations highest goal scorer,Emmanuel Emenike following the injury he sustained at the weekend.

The Spartak Moscow hit-man damaged his knee ligaments on Sunday against Anzhi Makhachkala and had to be stretched off and he is likely to miss the Eagles’ 2014 World Cup qualifiers against Kenya and Namibia and the Confederations Cup in Brazil.

“It’s unfortunate that after coming back from a long injury lay-off, Emenike suffered another injury blow. The team was looking forward to his return because he was surely missed in the last game against Kenya.”

“This latest injury setback is going to be a big blow for the team and we will miss him- especially as the team looks forward to the World Cup qualifiers and the Confederations Cup,” the former Besiktas of Turkey goal-tender said.

It would be recalled that Emenike suffered a muscle tear in the semi-final of the 2013 AFCON against Mali which the Eagles won 4-1.    -------------------- Complete Sports

MIKEL: THIS IS OUR TROPHY

MIKEL: THIS IS OUR TROPHY

Super Eagles midfielder,Mikel Obi is confident Chelsea will qualify for the final of the Europa League tonight, almost one year after playing in the finals of the UEFA champions League.

The English Premier League outfit beat FC Basel of Switzerland 2-1 in the semi-final first leg and are now poised to reach their first-ever Europa League final in front of their home fans at the Stamford Bridge. A win or draw in tonight's game will ensure that and Mikel is sure that will be the case at the end of 90 minutes.

The winners of this tie will clash with the winners of the other semi-final between Fenerbache and Benfica with Fenerbache having the edge after they won the first clash 1-0 at home.

"We are at an advantage to reach the final having won the first leg. Victory is what we aim for on Thursday, but we will approach the game with all seriousness," Mikel was quoted as saying by mtnfootball.

Mikel will also back his London club to finish within the top four in the EPL and thus qualify for the more prestigious Champions League next season.

Chelsea are currently third on the EPL table with 65 points from 34 games and have a game in hand.

"It has been a tough season. We can still achieve our aim of getting a trophy and secure a place in the Champions League. Again we are in pole position for this and we will strive hard to achieve it," assured Mikel.    Meanwhile,Rafa Benitez insists he will field a very strong team in tonight's Europa League game against Basel not minding the possibility of having as many as four key players missing the final on account of that.

Benitez has Ashley Cole suspended, with a further four one booking away from missing the final. They are David Luiz, Ramires, Ryan Bertrand and John Mikel Obi.

'The main thing is to win and qualify for the final. We will try to do it with the best team possible for this game,' Benitez confirmed. 'It doesn't matter about the yellow cards.’ -------------------- Complete Sports

Barcelona 0-3 Bayern Munich (Agg 0-7): Rampant Germans complete humiliation

A wonderful strike from Robben, Muller's effort and Pique's unfortunate own goal sealed a crushing victory for die Roten, who move on to the first all-German clash in the final

Bayern Munich ensured it will be an all-German Champions League final after they defeated Barcelona 3-0 and completed a 7-0 aggregate victory on Wednesday night.

Arjen Robben fired a perfect left-footed effort past Victor Valdes to make it 1-0, before an own goal from Gerard Pique and Thomas Muller's strike added insult to injury for the hosts.

Lionel Messi was named on the bench prior to kick-off, but despite that blow Barcelona began on the front foot and enjoyed a positive opening 20 minutes, even if it was bereft of the clear opportunities their early endeavours perhaps deserved.

The Catalans began to suffer against a Bayern defence that was organised and committed around the box, and were forced to try their luck from deep. This almost paid off midway through the first half; Pedro let loose with a fierce effort 35 metres out, but Manuel Neuer was equal to it, in what was the best opening of the first 45 minutes.

Dani Alves then whipped a cross into the box that found Cesc Fabregas. The ex-Arsenal man did well to chest down to Xavi, who found himself free, but the midfielder uncharacteristically lost his cool and fired his volley well over the crossbar.

Despite these moments of pressure, die Roten coped well with the hosts' advances and always looked dangerous breaking from their own half. Robben and Franck Ribery in particular stood out with all-action performances, stretching the Barca backline, albeit without creating too many clear openings before heading in for the interval.

Just three minutes after half-time, the game was over as a contest. David Alaba showed terrific vision deep on the left flank to find Robben on the opposite side of the pitch and though he still had work to do, the Dutchman cut inside of Adriano and fired left-footed past Victor Valdes.

The Blaugrana did not give up after that fatal blow and kept forwards, but there was no joy for the likes of David Villa as they were suffocated in the final third. Indeed, Bayern were the team that continued to enjoy the best opportunities; Robben side footed wide of the post with the goal in full view, after a storming run down the left from Ribery had spilt open the Liga leaders.

Messi remained on the sidelines throughout the 90 minutes, unused as Tito Vilanova recognised that the game was beyond the reach of his charges. Further confirmation was provided by the hapless Gerard Pique, who sliced a cross into his own net with 18 minutes to go. A convincing defeat soon turned into a humiliation when Thomas Muller rose to head in the third, as Bayern marched into their third Champions League final in four years.  ------------------- goal.com

The midfielder has not played the last two Chelsea matches and that could become three if he is rested on Thursday

Mikel Obi could be left out of the Chelsea side that is going to take on FC Basel in a second leg Europa League tie on Thursday night.
The European champions will seek to consolidate their 2-1 away win and that could mean further rest for Mikel, as he is a yellow card away from missing the final.
Though Ramires who could have played suffered a leg injury against Swansea last weekend, Rafael Benitez could play the pair of Frank Lampard and David Luiz in midfield to preserve his Nigerian midfielder.
Mikel did not feature against Basel last Thursday and was on the bench for all 90 minutes against Swansea. His compatriot, Victor Moses scored last Thursday but was not listed for the 2-0 win over Swansea so he could be back for the second leg.
Mikel has played 22 times in the league this season.

Chelsea play Basel on Thursday and then are away to Premier League champions Manchester United on Sunday at Old Trafford as they continue their quest for a top-four finish and a return to the Champions League. ----------------- goal.com

Bayern humiliation confirms that Barcelona are not the greatest club team of all time

May 2, 2013 9:00:00 AM
There has been a growing consensus over the last few years that the current Barca are the best in history but Carlo Garganese disagrees following Wednesday's thumping
COMMENT
By Carlo Garganese

"Barcelona are the greatest team of all time."

Marcello Lippi, Sir Alex Ferguson, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Ronald Koeman are just a handful of the prestigious names to proclaim that the current Barcelona are the best we have ever seen.

Many of the superlatives that have been showered on the four-time European champions over the last few years are richly deserved. There is no doubt that the Blaugrana have been among the finest in history, inspired by the incomparable Lionel Messi and two iconic midfielders in Xavi and Andres Iniesta, but some of the flattery is short-sighted and ignores the past. An ignorance that is worth highlighting following Barcelona's second successive Champions League semi-final exit, to Bayern Munich on Wednesday, a crushing 7-0 aggregate defeat which probably signals the end of the Catalans' period of dominance.

Comparing teams from different eras is always a thankless task. Football has altered and evolved immeasurably in the last few decades. Modifications such as the backpass and offside rule have created more attacking football, whereas the introduction of synthetic footballs, stricter referees and the multi-ball system have spawned a completely different environment.

Improvements in technology, training and medicine (as well as the destruction of blood bags!) mean that footballers will continue to get faster, fitter and stronger, but that doesn't mean today's players are better. It just makes them more suitable to their surroundings.
THE GREATEST EVER
European Cup wins by golden generations
R.Madrid '56-60
Ajax '71-73
Bayern '74-76
Liverpool '77-81
Milan '89-94
Benfica '61-68
Inter '64-65
Milan '03-07
Barca '08-13

The definition of greatness is open to debate. Is it all about success? Argentina's 1986 World Cup winning coach Carlos Bilardo, who was notorious for his win at all costs ideology, remarked: "Football is played to win. You have to be first. Second is no good, second is a failure."

If this is true, then the current Barcelona cannot be considered the greatest club team of all time. At least on a continental level. Taking the appointment of Pep Guardiola as coach in 2008 as the starting point of this Barca cycle, the Blaugrana have since won two Champions Leagues in five seasons, reaching the semi-final in the other three campaigns.

Barcelona failed to defend a European Cup crown like the last team to do so in 1990, the AC Milan of Arrigo Sacchi. If we prolong that Rossoneri generation to include the first spell of Sacchi's successor, Fabio Capello, then Milan actually captured three European Cups in five years, and made the final five times between 1989 and 1995. Far more impressive numbers than today's Barcelona.

Alfredo Di Stefano's Real Madrid lifted the first five European Cups, Johan Cruyff inspired Ajax to three successive trophies in the 1970s before Franz Beckenbauer immediately did the same for Bayern Munich. Eusebio's Benfica progressed to five showpieces in eight years (winning two) in the 1960s, Helenio Herrera's Inter retained their title in 1965, while Bob Paisley's Liverpool won the European Cup on three occasions between 1977 and 1981. All these teams achieved more in Europe's elite competition than the current Barcelona. As did, arguably, Carlo Ancelotti's AC Milan, who reached three finals in five seasons in the mid-noughties – claiming two. Were we to expand this discussion to South America, one could also consider Copa Libertadores and Intercontinental Cup protagonists from the 1960s like the Santos of Pele and Penarol of Alberto Spencer.

Of course, domestic success is relevant too, but with the exception of the Sacchi and Ancelotti Milan sides, all of the above generations dominated their local leagues – just as Barcelona have in capturing every La Liga title bar one since 2008-09.

Arsene Wenger would argue that greatness should be measured aesthetically. "The teams that remain in history are the ones that had style in their play, not just the ones that won trophies," the Arsenal manager stressed in 2003. Some of the most beautiful outfits failed gloriously – Hungary 1954, Netherlands 1974 and Brazil 1982 are three international examples – yet their legacies are legendary.

There is a split in opinion over just how entertaining Barca have been – detractors considering them incomplete and occasionally sterile - but what isn’t in doubt is that no team has ever monopolised possession like Xavi, Messi & Co. The collective brand of one-touch tiki-taka passing is completely unique and their pressing high up the pitch equally revolutionary. This prompted Sacchi to concede that Guardiola’s Barcelona had marked football’s first tactical development since his Milan retained the European Cup in 1990.

"Football is played to win. You have to be first. Second is no good, second is a failure"
- Carlos Bilardo

But does this development make Barcelona the greatest club team of all-time? Not in this writer's view. There have been tactical innovations throughout history – from the W-M to the 4-2-4 to the 3-5-2 – and only last week former Italy star Gianluca Vialli proclaimed that Champions League finalists Bayern Munich and Dortmund were taking football into a new era where fitness and pressing supersedes possession and passing. Has the antidote to Barcelona's ground-breaking bane already been found?

What certainly must be taken into account is the strength of competition during any given period of dominance. Real Madrid’s five successive titles were attained when the European Cup was a fledgling tournament and some European leagues were still semi-professional or regional, including Germany's. But the eras of Benfica, Inter, Ajax, Bayern, Liverpool and the two Milans were all at least comparable to the current age - certainly in terms of competition - with the latter two undoubtedly stronger.

Dominance | Barca never retained the Champions League like Sacchi's Milan did

Barcelona's epoch would see European football monopolised by just a handful of rich, elite clubs. There have been few rivals for Barca both domestically and on the continent, and we currently live in an age where defences and defenders are at their weakest for half a century. Would Messi have scored 73 goals in one season back in 1989-90? No chance.

With the exception of Benfica, Ancelotti's Milan and perhaps Madrid, every other protagonist referenced dominated when their domestic league was not only the best in Europe, but also fiercely competitive. Just qualifying for the European Cup was a huge achievement with only the league winner granted access, even if the tournament itself was less gruelling than the current format.

Ultimately, Barcelona have not done enough to be ranked above the likes of Sacchi's Milan and Cruyff's Ajax. Up to 10 sides were more successful at the highest level of club competition, despite the current era being far from super-competitive. Barcelona's beauty and legacy are insufficient. The Spaniards needed to retain the Champions League at the very least and ideally win three or four finals in total to close the argument.

This is unlikely to happen now following their humiliating loss to Bayern. With Carles Puyol and Xavi hitting their mid-thirties, Victor Valdes leaving and stars like Dani Alves and David Villa past their peak, we have surely already seen the best of this Barcelona golden generation. ------------------------ goal.com

Messi was not injured, says Vilanova

Messi was not injured, says Vilanova

Messi was not injured, says Vilanova

By Livio Caferoglu
May 1, 2013 11:48:00 PM
The 44-year-old also intimated that the Argentine would have made an appearance had he believed his side still had a chance of progressing
Tito Vilanova has revealed that injury was not the reason behind Lionel Messi's absence during the second leg of Barcelona's Champions League semi-final with Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

The Argentine attacker was a surprise omission from the Blaugrana starting line-up against the Bavarians, with many speculating that he suffered a recurrence of his recent hamstring knock prior to the 3-0 defeat.

However, this was not the case according to his coach, who also claimed that Messi would have made an appearance in the second half had he thought the Catalans still had a chance of making the final on May 25.

"Messi was not injured, but he was not feeling okay, and I thought that in his situation he would not help the team," Vilanova told reporters.

"He played in Bilbao because he was in much better condition, but at the end of the game he contracted some strange sensations.

"We would have taken the risk of playing Leo towards the end of the match if we still had a chance of making the final."

Reflecting on his side's performance at Camp Nou, Vilanova admitted that Barca were "massively" outclassed by Bayern but insisted that widespread personnel changes would not be necessary during the close season.

"Bayern are physically at a great level. The difference today between the sides was massive and I congratulate them on their progression, but also thanks to our fans for their support," he added.

"We've been suffering with injuries all season and at this level you pay for that. Every squad needs to be changed, but we have a good squad already.

"We don't need to make a lot of changes as we have some players who are still recovering."

Meanwhile, David Villa supported Vilanova's assertion that Messi was not in the right physical condition to start at Camp Nou, but nonetheless urged his team-mates to move on quickly from their European humbling.

"They were better during both matches, we must admit it. We're sad because we were close to Wembley but they deserved it and we must congratulate them," the Spain striker remarked.

"We tried to attack from the beginning in order to quickly reduce the aggregate, but the difference was too big in the end.

"Messi wanted to play but during the day he knew he wouldn't be able to do it. It's not an excuse, even if he is the best player in the world.

"Now we must forget about the Champions League and focus on La Liga. There are still many happy moments that we are yet to experience and we are close to winning the league title." -------------------- goal.com
